Lightyears was founded in 2005 and became part of the Republic of Fritz Hansen in 2015.

The original aim of the company was to create contemporary lighting designs based on a strict Scandinavian design approach in which anything superfluous is erased and you are left with only the logical and relevant parts. The focus was on simplicity and functionality. This resulted in a cohesive collection of beautifully designed decorative lighting that was easy to use and a compliment to any interior.

These qualities are still apparent today with wonderful new lights being added to the collection, and in contrast to the contemporary designs there are also a scattering of older, classic pieces within the assortment of lamps. Examples of these are lighting from Fritz Hansen’s Kaiser idell range, originally designed in 1936, which adds an historic note, together with the very successful Orient pendant, a Jo Hammerborg design from 1963. In the same vein, launched April 2018, the exceptional Cross-Plex table lamp by Danish architect Bodil Kjær, which first saw the light of day in 1961, is introduced anew within the Lightyears’ family.
